Fighting for You

It's time to fight and win for you. Richard Bernstein wants to use the power of the Attorney General's office to fight for and protect Michigan families. To make sure everyone gets a fair shake, not just powerful corporations and insurance companies.

I know we can do a better job of protecting Michigan's people,The stakes could not be higher. Every day our streets become less safe, water and air less clean, pensions less stable, and health insurance less secure. Michigan's consumer protection laws have been severely weakened. Our civil rights laws watered down. And now, our dire economy has made our most vulnerable citizens even more at risk.

Enough is enough. Bernstein believes Michigan deserves more than politics as usual, and that it's time to ask tough questions of Lansing policy makers saying, "We need a fresh start. We need an Attorney General who fights and wins for everyday people, and that’s the change I plan to bring to the Capitol."

"I know we can do a better job of protecting Michigan's people," says Bernstein, "And I want to bring my record of independent-minded thinking, and a no nonsense approach to getting things done to Lansing. It is one thing to legislate, but another to litigate. As I travel around Michigan, I hear frustration with state government. A different approach is long overdue."

Bernstein is no stranger to fighting and winning major battles against powerful interests - holding greedy corporations and careless or dishonest government leaders accountable.

Bernstein started at the top in the 1990s when he fought and won for severely disabled students and their families. He stopped Governor Engler's proposed re-organization of the state's special education system that would have placed all special education students, regardless of their disability or age, in the same classes, with no restrictions on special education class size.

Bernstein fought and won for bus riders who were abandoned by the City of Detroit. He filed a suit on behalf of five disabled Detroiters and was joined by the United States Department of Justice to force the City of Detroit to fix broken wheelchair lifts on its buses.

Bernstein fought and won for the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America. He prevailed in an action against the University of Michigan’s plans for disabled seating in Michigan Stadium, ensuring that fans could enjoy the same stadium experience as any fan.

Bernstein fought and won for Oakland County pedestrians and cyclists when he sued the Oakland County (Michigan) Road Commission after "roundabout" traffic circles were built without disabled access.

Bernstein fought and won for students when he encouraged Amazon to restore the audio capability for Kindle, to ensure that all people have access to the power of the Internet in education.

Bernstein is fighting and winning for airline travellers against Delta Airlines and the Wayne County Airport Authority to ensure fully accessible terminals at Detroit Metro Airport and on airplanes everywhere.
